Research suggests that after long-term alcohol exposure, the brain attempts to restore equilibrium by compensating for the depressant effects of alcohol; thus, the brain decreases inhibitory neurotransmission and enhances excitatory neurotransmission.
So basically if you keep drinking you will find it harder to relax.
Drink sporadically if you have to, but not to excess. If you have an addictive personality then you shouldn’t be drinking at all. Do something you find exciting instead, get outdoors more.
And eat foods that will increase your GABA levels.
GABA, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter, is believed to play an important role in memory – it slows down the rate at which neurons fire, preventing overstimulation. Altered levels of GABA have been reported in depression, anxiety, neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s, and normal ageing.
GABA cannot cross the blood brain barrier so you need to eat foods that are rich in GABA, you can’t just pop a pill.
